Ironfly Knives first offering! Zesty!
Zesty!
Origin story
We’ve sensed a gap in the market where we can jump in with our funky approach to pocket knives. We genuinely want to make a budget friendly knife brand, that stands behind its pocket knives with pride. Also we would like to bring something different from our pocket knife brainy lab. We re eager to get the things you see in premium non titanium pocket knives brought down price-wise not messing with the quality, to the tiers of sensible affordability, let’s call it that. We really think that there is so much we can do with simple knife looking pocket knives without naming them by browsing through Greco-Roman literature looking for deity names. Yes! Zesty is the most knife looking folding knife that you can get for the price and nowadays that is a rarity. We want to have fun with our knives, making them and making them as affordable as we can! We wish you have the same cutting extravaganza with our Zesty without cutting your own pockets and letting the money fall down your pants!
Ironfly as a group of guys is deeply rooted in various pocket knife production companies with years of experience as OEM, designers, grindaholics and sharpeners, generally we eat, sleep and breathe pocket knives!
Let’s talk a bit about the materials we chose for this pocket knife build:
Why VG10? It’s like old news…
Well to answer it simply by telling the truth “The Budget” and market tier we’re after. We would love to go Nitro V or S390 or k390 or Z Wear but those are expensive and what we want here is extreme affordability. Why vg10 and not the similarly priced 14c28n? Well vg10 is far better under microscope and carbides look decent, other thing is its the personal preference that the screaming edge lasts a tad bit longer plus it’s easier to pronounce. Look at Spyderco, their budget stuff is in vg10 for a reason. Our drop point Zesty truly benefits from vg10 as it is highly corrosion resistant and it makes sense in a pocket knife meant to be used in all sorts of environments from Florida to Arizona, Kirghistan to Sweden or Italy. It won’t rust easy and it will hold an edge plus it can be field sharpened with a nasty stare or simple pocket sharpeners. But for the love of all things please do not use pull through sharpening thingies, those pull and tear carbides from all edges regardless of the class, super-steels or not.
Why Micarta?
Micarta is one of our favorite materials. It sucks to make it and grind it and its toxic dust can make a round trip to hospital a possibility, but If done right its the best thing you can hold in your hand bar a thousand bucks or a hand of a loved one. Its the next best thing. Natural feel of micarta, textolite or whatever you want to call it can only be outclassed by the feel of grainy wood scales but that is a personal preferance. If you like contoured feel and warmth of micarta than Zesty is the pocket knife for you! Micarta scales can be used and abuse as mush as G10 or any hard use purpose built material. It’s tough so it fits our Zesty just fine.
Why Wire Clip?
We forgot to mention “Ambidextrous Wire Clip” or we did not, oh it’s highlighted in the campaign title. Simplicity and extreme “bendability”, it just plain works and it’s so non intimidating that people who do not like pocket knives, folding knives and general edged EDC tools will not assume that what you have in your pocket is the thing that you have in your pocket. Am I making any sense, it is super simple and super functional and it goes with the general theme and makes Zesty look just right.
Ergonomics 101
What’s the point of making a pocket knife if holding it in use turns out to be a tragically uncomfortable experience? We’ve squeezed our Zesty’s handles so many times under so many different angles that we feel it’s safe to say that the pocket knife is very very comfortable to use in cutting tasks, even under scorching heat of our systems sun. It doesn’t slip even if you suffer from hyperhydrosis. Micarta helps with that but also having a designer in team that understands that purpose beats the quirkiness each and every time. I do understand the signature look, but if signature look means blisters than no thank you. We’ve had our share of experimental phases and what it always comes down to is “But what’s it like in actual use?”. That’s our mantra. It’s like going from Rolling Stones to electro pop, eventually you’ll be blasting Jagger no matter what wondering what the hell happened. Experience.
What we do differently?
Wehave experience in making knives in all price brackets. From overpriced mid-techs to under-priced high quality knives made out of exotic materials with surface treatments that challenge even the best custom knife makers. When it comes to pocket knives we always know what we do even tho for some of us parallel parking still remains enigmatic.
